Wrappers!!! Get more lines in the water!

Its a random Monday morning and an email came into my inbox today which sparked an idea for an encouraging blog post.

I believe that most wrappers understand that we are a bit of a rare breed.  A strange mix of artist, craftsperson and business person.  We love to create but also have an intense desire to succeed financially for our business, our employees and our family.  We love competition but also seem to revel in the camaraderie and support of our fellow wrappers all across the world.  That strange, and sometimes counterintuitive, view of our industry leads to the various ways we see and operate in marketing our wrap shops.

Some common questions… Should you focus your marketing strictly efforts on your local market area or devote time & resources to pursuing a more national image?  What certification should you get and which one will bring in the most business?  What should you do with social media or is it even worth it?  Should you get involved with local car shows.. compete in wrap competitions… join a prestigious networking organization…?

Yes, it can be a bit much.

Here’s the thing though.  When you think back in your life you will probably notice that pretty much all of your business is cyclical.  For months we can find our good leads coming from the PDAA and then that dries up for a bit.  Meanwhile 3M’s certified installations start popping again or the Avery Dennison CWI network could be pinging away.  Your personal local book of business goes starts doing some cool things but then your involvement in the UASG starts bringing in some good leads.  Your participation in WRAPSCON’s Wrap Olympics, WrapGlove’s Wraps LIVE or a a global competition with the FESPA World Wrap Masters links you up with other shops who need help.

And another thing, how in the world do you get social media to work for you!?  While there are a number of strategies here are a couple of tips.  Number one, directly TAG the photo itself AND tag the comment you write.  Tag the film manufacturer you used, tag the client, tag the installer who did the work, the photographer etc.  You can also tag those of us who have dedicated time and a platform to help promote wraps!  Tag @wrappermapper, @thewrappromoter, @wrapfolio @paintisdead, @wrapchannel etc.

Another way to increase your chances of being seen and re-posted is make sure you are showing off your projects as best you can.  A focus on high quality, professional grade, well produced photos / videos will go a long way.

DO: Make sure you have a clean, well-staged, well lit, uncluttered composition with interesting angles

DO: Take the time to work out and create images that show off the wrap film itself as well as the project

DO: Let us know if a particular photographer, designer etc. should be credited for work. We love promoting all aspects of a well produced wrap job. (give us proper tags to use)

DON’T: Send in photos of a dirty shop, cluttered backgrounds, unwashed cars etc.

DON’T: Submit images with big branding on the photos. We will ensure you are properly tagged and credited for the content.

Ultimately, the more lines we have in the water the more fish we catch right?

New Video Gives Us A Refresher On PPF Installation Techniques

Proper installation of paint protection film ensures the highest level of performance and protection. This is also true for non-traditional films launched from manufacturers that provide a special effect or finish.

This new video from expert installer Justin Pate and The Wrap Institute takes viewers step-by-step through the latest installation techniques, while demonstrating Avery Dennison Supreme Defense matte finish paint protection film on a Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Spyder.

According to Pate, for a flawless install, he recommends:

1) Before getting started, be sure to have a clean surface and degrease the edges of the vehicle; including around the edges of the trunk and wheel base

2) Even if your surface is already “clean,” be sure to pre-clean the area for application. Spray the surface with a slip solution and squeegee the surface to remove any specs of dirt that may have drifted onto the car prior to install

3) When installing the film, be sure to start at the corners and work your way across the surface

4) During the install process you’ll want to even out the tension of the film using a glide solution and overlapping squeegee strokes

5) For air gaps, lift the film and even out the surface with an open hand before continuing the squeegee process

You’ll notice in the video how Pate and his team manage the trim line and offer a simple technique to prep the trim blade for an exact finish. Even with years of experience installing vehicle wrapping and paint protection films, it’s always a good idea to take a few minutes for a refresher that improves upon your skill set. Who knows, you might learn something new too. Check it out.

Avery Dennison Introduces Paint Protection Film Cutting Software

MENTOR, Ohio – Nov. 21, 2019 – Avery Dennison Graphics Solutions (NYSE:AVY) has announced the launch of the company’s new Paint Protection Film Cutting Software – now available across the United States and Canada.

As one of the industry’s most user-friendly cutting programs, it was created with dealers and installers in mind. Intended to be used in combination with Avery Dennison Paint Protection Film SPF-XI, users can choose from thousands of precut templates to find the perfect match for a specific vehicle. Shop owners and installers can rest easy knowing they can deliver an exact fit for their customers while offering long-lasting protection with the use of SPF-XI.

“We continue to evolve with the industry and our customers,” said Abby Monnot, senior global segment manager, Avery Dennison Graphics Solutions, North America. “Because of this, we invested in the opportunity to expand our technologies and offerings to help our customers be more productive and profitable. This new software is a supplement to our SPF-XI product. It has unlimited cuts for a low monthly fee, so you can use our SPF-XI product and not left software costs take away from your profits.”

Paint Protection Film (PPF) protects a vehicle’s appearance from insects, road debris and minor abrasions. Offering the film, or the service to install the film, allows the opportunity for dealers to earn incremental income. PPF can be a profitable upsell opportunity with average MSRPs that could range from $500 for a partial and up to $6,000 for full installations.

Avery Dennison SPF-XI PPF, coupled with the software and templates, can be a significant addition to a business. Additional benefits of the new software include: manually, hand-nested files that serve to save more material than automated nesting; the ability to see the square footage of each kit for easy and fast pricing; wrapped and unwrapped edge kits; and the ability to set the cut order so track marks are not left across materials.

The software is available through subscription. Avery Dennison is offering a dealer special, while supplies last, for one free sample roll of SPF-XI with the purchase of a one-month subscription to the software. Learn more here: http://bit.ly/ppfsoftware.

Avery Dennison has made their system available for free to the industry with a simple click on the link… Avery Dennison Visualizer

A conversation with Abby Monnot, Sr. Global Segment Manager, Automotive Aftermarket & Marketing Manager Graphics NA with Avery Dennison reveals the thought process behind the new powerful tool…

“In working with many wrap professionals, visiting countless wrap shops across the country and watching the interactions between customers and shop owners, we realized there was a gap in the industry.  The gap was being able to showcase digitally the closest replication possible to what our colors look like in real life, to help wrap professionals sell a color change wrap.  We hope to take the guesswork out of your customers choosing a vehicle wrap and hope it helps streamline your sales process.  All new colors will be featured on the visualizer tool, so you’ll be the first to see them!  We will keep taking feedback and improving the tool over time, so be on the look out for new updates.”

One click to the visualizer tool and you too can see the Avery Dennison wrap film colors, in real time, on a great rendering system. Your wrap shop has just received a game changer new tool!

The goal is to make the design process a simple, fast and affordable variant for anyone wanting to quickly change the appearance of his or her vehicle. We have made the design system and designs as variable and applicable as possible for nearly every vehicle model”
You can select a new design without limits after registering for free. Everything new begins with a design, so our motto is Design first. And we live up to it,” said Martin in conclusion.

AVERY DENNISON ANNOUNCES TOP 10 VINYL WRAPS OF 2018

Mentor, Ohio, December 20, 2018 – Avery Dennison Graphics Solutions has chosen the 10 most impressive vinyl wraps using Avery Dennison products in 2018. This is the fifth annual list of vehicle and non-vehicle wraps, and it features some of the most unique and creative projects yet. Five car wraps and five non-vehicle wraps were installed with Avery Dennison Supreme Wrapping™ Film, Conform Chrome™, and digitally printed films MPI 1105™, MPI 1405™ and MPI 2728™.

“The possibilities with vinyl films are almost endless, and every year we get to see new and exciting projects that take Avery Dennison films to the next level,” said Jeff Losch, North America marketing director at Avery Dennison Graphics Solutions. “Digitally printed or color shifting, on a car or on a guitar, 2018 had another incredible lineup of unique, well-executed wraps.”

The Top 5 vehicle wraps of 2018 include:

A printed Conform Chrome™ wrap was featured on a truck build by Legendary Customs in the AMSOIL booth at SEMA. IVS Wraps, with design help from Dan Nava of the International Brotherhood of Wrappers, created a warplane look.

Rust and camouflage are popular effects created with printed MPI 1105™, but Spectrum Auto brought out a new look. This sedan sports a realistic marble look, thanks to a quality installation and the clarity of the film.

Wrap Like A King Regional Winner Canadian Wrap Masters created three layers of embossing using Conform Chrome™ Red with DOL 1370Z satin laminate. This drawn-by-hand design wowed judges and created a one-of-a-kind look.

Bullitt Auto Detail and Vinyl Wraps found its way into the Avery Dennison top wraps again by wowing a Formula Drift racing team with this printed MPI 1105™ wrap on a 53-foot trailer.

Rounding out the top vehicle wraps is the global winner for the 2018 Wrap Like A King Challenge, the Mission Flyer 2.0 by MetroWrapz. Another warplane-inspired project, made possible by Supreme Wrapping™ Film, MPI 1105™ and Conform Chrome™ films, brought the wrap king crown back to the United States for the first time since 2015.

The Top 5 non-vehicle wraps of 2018 include:

Workhorse Signs pulled off a challenging wrap by using printed MPI 1405™ film and crafty installation techniques. The shop had to overcome sand and heat while installing a graphic on a brick beach wall. With an ability to conform to textured surfaces, MPI 1405™ film adhered to the wall and made for a successful application.

A toy for kids and adults alike, the hoverboard was a popular item to wrap, and Vehicle Wraps Inc. gave this one a shade shifting look using ColorFlow™ Roaring Thunder vinyl.

CKL Wraps helped to drum up excitement for a Lego exhibit at a local museum. The wrap incorporated calendered MPI 2728™ that would provide adhesion without leaving residue on the windows at the end of the promotion.

Supreme Wrapping™ Film Diamond Blue paired with blue waters to make for a stunning look on this 56-foot race yacht. Wrapture Customs took on this challenging project and made a boat wrap to be remembered.

Custom designs on guitars are a trademark of rock enthusiasts, and Phillips Signs carried on that tradition. MPI 1105™ supercast film gave this six-string some character with a weathered wood design.

To see more more examples of wraps done in Avery Dennison films, follow Avery Dennison Graphics Solutions on Facebook at www.facebook.com/AveryDennisonGraphics and on Instagram at @ADGraphics_NA. Women of Wrap take over the Avery Dennison booth at SEMA 2018

If you attended SEMA in Las Vegas this year you were treated to a first-time ever, one-of-a-kind, wrap industry event.  Imagine a huge crowd of people gathered around a couple of amazing cars and discovering what most of us already in the industry know… we have some incredibly talented wrapping ladies!

This all began as an idea from Jen Carney (Carbon Wraps).  In her words… “I have wanted to put together an all female wrap team for years, as I’m sure others have as well. I figured there was no harm in asking, so I pitched the idea to Sarah and Patti at Avery Dennison who were immediately on board and excited. Justin Pate was gracious enough to lend us some time and booth space while Jofferey Van Der Jagt supplied a killer design.  The goal was to show the presence that women have in the industry though we don’t always claim the spotlight.  I wanted to highlight, hopefully encourage and help women gain confidence in their skills as they become more involved with wraps. I hope that we empowered women and men to build more teams together.”

With the original team of Kathy Alexander (Incognito Wraps), Kinsey Sharp (Sharp Wraps OKC) and Cindy Richards (Avery Dennison) the group was further bolstered by the events’s MC Starla Miller (Miller Decals) to add some spice and commentary.

Abby Monnot (Avery Dennison) said, “I am so proud of what these group of women are continuing to accomplish.  I’m even more proud they came to Avery Dennison with the idea and knew we would support them.  Being a woman in this industry, I got chills watching them install, because something like this was first of its kind.  I know a lot of them stepped out of their comfort zones to be featured in our booth and I am in awe of their courage.  I’m happy we were able to provide them the platform for their success.  This is what my job is all about.”

Cindy Richards added her thoughts by saying “I am just excited to have this kind of exposure for women in the industry. There are some amazing talents here and we were excited to give a platform. I hope this increases the number of women to stand up, be proud of what they do and empower them to showcase it.”

As an added twist, Chrissy Ross Walthour (IBOW), pitched in with another suggestion from the crowd… how about bringing in some of the wrapping pro ladies who are watching to add to the team?  With a little encouragement the booth was soon home to even more wrapping talent as the Women of Wrap swelled to include Brittany Banks (All City Wraps), Krystal Miszewski (Candy Wraps), Paige Walton (S6 Wraps) and Tasha Marohn (TM Motorsports Imaging).

Final result?  A super cool wrapped car with an even cooler showcase of the skill and talent the ladies in our industry possess.
